Like a great deal of people, I watched this drama years before I read the book - although the book I am sad to say was never completed - I think the library were anxious to recover it having re-loaned to me about 3 times!
Emma Harte was a truly inspirational character, her sheer mettle and determination to succeed in an era where women were not readily accepted or indeed respected in business made gripping viewing. From her beginnings as a humble maid, she proved herself to be of greater substance than those who she once served.
However, despite my admiration of the character i was disappointed in the portrayal of her as a mother in the drama. Afterall, as a 16 year-old, young Emma nursed her sick mother and tended her siblings as well as serving Fairley Hall. But her desire for the stability of power rendered her almost cold as a mother, driven only by success, shops and shares. It was reassuring then to see her return more to this original nurturing as she grew older, in spite of her determination to block those who plotted to take her empire.
The young Emma played by Jenny Seagrove was captivating to watch. The role was well chosen if only for the ability of this actress to combine stealth with a certain vulnerability. Bold and yet beautiful, she captivated the audience with her charisma alone.
I regret I cannot compare too deeply the dramatisation with the book. But all in all a series i could - and will - enjoy again and again in future years. Thank you Barbara for a sterling effort!
