Author Bradford revives heroine in new book 13:51 LOS ANGELES, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The late heroine in romance novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford's blockbuster opus "A Woman of Substance" returns from the dead on Tuesday when Bradford's latest book goes on sale. "Emma's Secret" (St. Martin's Press) revolves around the exploits of retail tycoon Emma Harte and her many heirs. The family's rags-to-riches saga provided the grist for three novels, beginning in 1979 with "A Woman of Substance." To her later regret, Bradford ended the series with 1988's "To Be The Best," but she has now resurrected Harte with the help of some conveniently discovered wartime diaries that provide a glimpse into a missing decade of her life. More than 350,000 copies of "Emma's Secret" will go on sale across North America, according to a statement from Bradford's publicist. Additionally, an excerpt from the book will be e-mailed at midnight to 2.5 million registered readers. Bradford and her producer husband, Robert Bradford, are in talks with undisclosed networks to turn "Emma's Secret" into a miniseries, the statement added. To date, 10 of Bradford's 19 novels have been produced for television. Copyright Reuters/VNU 2004 |
