Meet Robert Bradford

Robert Bradford
Robert Bradford is the debonair German-born and French-educated American film producer with whom Barbara Taylor fell in love on their first date. They were married in London on Christmas Eve, 1963.

When Barbara finished her first novel A Woman of Substance she began a long tradition of dedicating each of her books to "Bob." It is Bob who oversees and protects her business interests, and to whom she entrusts the translation of her novels to the small screen.

In the years before meeting Barbara, Bob enjoyed a successful career as film producer all over the globe. In the 1950's he served as an Executive Producer for Samuel Bronston Productions in Madrid. Among his film credits from this era are John Paul Jones, El Cid, Fifty-Five Days in Peking and The Fall of the Roman Empire.

In the 1960's Mr. Bradford served as an Executive Producer for Hal Roach Studios in Los Angeles. This was followed by an extensive stint serving as Executive Vice President and CEO for Franco London Films S.A. in Paris. While at this major independent French film company, Bob oversaw some major productions including Impossible Object starring Alan Bates. During this period, Bob also worked as Executive VP and CEO for Franco London Music in London.

Since she began writing novels in 1979, Bob has handled the personal management for Barbara. Included are her record breaking publishing deals, production of the TV adaptations for the books and one theatrical production in London (Dangerous To Know, 1998).

Although he declined to produce A Woman of Substance, concerned that a television adaptation might disappoint her, he became intimately involved with the project anyway. Since then, most of Barbara's books have been produced or co-produced for television by Bob and seen by millions of people all over the world.

In the United States, CBS-TV has a long-term deal for the author's work. In 1999, Bob traveled to Venice, Italy and Dublin, Ireland for the production of A Secret Affair, which he co-produced with Adelson Entertainment and which recently aired on CBS. Presently, Mr. Bradford is overseeing the various stages of production for several of Barbara's novels.

Video versions of these films continue to be available in the UK through Odyssey Video. Currently the Emma Harte Trilogy is available in the US from Acorn Media Publishing, beginning with the six-hour mini-series A Woman of Substance, and continuing with Hold the Dream and To Be The Best. The series became available on DVD in 2001.

With her special brand of eloquence, Barbara Taylor Bradford toasted Robert Bradford at the elegant dinner dance the couple held in December 1998 in celebration of their 35th wedding anniversary: "I have always loved you, and I will always love you, until the day I die."
