Barbara was in the UK to accept THE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from The Variety Club of Great Britain on December 8th at a gala luncheon in Leeds. In North America, St. Martin's Press will be reissuing five classic paperback titles from Barbara's past. The original Emma Harte Trilogy (A Woman of Substance, Hold The Dream and To Be The Best) has been given a makeover, as have early favorites Voice of the Heart and Act of Will. A Woman of Substance hit the stores on August 30th. The other four titles will be available everywhere starting October 4th to coincide with the paperback debut of Unexpected Blessings. Barbara has teamed up with FIRST BOOK, a literacy organization in Washington, DC to help bring free books to needy children. Barbara Honored by Siena College
On Sunday, May 22, Barbara addressed the graduating students of Siena College in upstate NY during commencement ceremonies. She was also the recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree as part of the program. Siena College chose Barbara for this prestigious recognition, calling her "The Grande Dame of Modern Women's Literature." This was Barbara's 4th honorary degree to date. A SECRET AFFAIR
FINALLY RELEASED ON DVD Just in time for the holiday season, Barbara's most popular TV movie is at long last being released on video/DVD. Back in 1999, A Secret Affair aired on CBS in the US and drew a higher rating than the World Series of baseball. Now Good Times Entertainment is releasing the film for the first time since that original broadcast. Starring Janine Turner (Northern Exposure), and set in the heart of Venice, this beloved film can finally be seen again by fans in the US and Canada. The video/DVD comes out on November 25th. On Monday, July the 7th, Barbara was honored by the British Isle of Man with a rare postal honor. Barbara attended the ceremonies on the Island during the Tynwald Holiday Weekend where she was the guest of honor in a series of events including the unveiling of her new postage stamp. The primary highlight took place on July 7th where Barbara was invited to join Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in a series of public events, including a march in the royal procession for the Tynwald ceremonies. The stamp sheet features the cover of Barbara's brand new novel, Emma's Secret, which includes scenes that take place on the Island. A microscopic excerpt from the new book is imprinted at the bottom of the sheet and can be viewed through a magnified glass. These official postage stamps, which have received Royal Approval, can be ordered through the Isle of Man post office, including a limited quantity of autographed First Day Covers.
